3 Steps To Falling In Love With Your Cervix

Loving Your Cervix

Originally written for and posted on NaturalBirthControl.com

I saw a post on Instagram the other day that pulled on my heart strings and tickled my cervix pink.
It read:

“I wanna fall in love but mainly with myself.”

Learning to love myself has been one of the most challenging personal goals I’ve ever had. It’s a self project I continue to work on every single day. One of the ways I practice self-love is by getting to know my body. In fact, I have a huge crush on my cervix.

MY WHAT!?

My cervix! Stick your finger all the way up your vagina and you’ll feel a little grape with a dimple on it. That’s her! She’s the gateway from your vagina into your uterus. Literally the portal of life and creation; She’s incredible, and I just love her!

BUT WHY?!

Because loving my cervix and getting to know her so well after all these years, has equipped me with the knowledge to prevent pregnancy without the pill (not to mention, I’ll be able to swap that and achieve pregnancy when I want to), she’s gifted me loads of feedback on my health and wellness, and she’s initiated many fabulous conversations in my living room (more on that later).

3 Steps to falling in love with your cervix

1.

STEP 1: LEARN HER LANGUAGE

Like in any relationship, it’s good to first get a discussion going.

Your cervix actually talks to you with her cervical mucus. It’s a hydrogel produced from the crypts of the cervix. Under the influence of progesterone, the cervical mucus creates a plug, preventing anything from entering the uterus. Then under the influence of estrogen, the plug is released, is visible at the vulva, and acts like a slip n’ slide straight to your cervix for sperm. It comes in all combinations of colors (cloudy, clear, pale yellow, brown, red) and consistencies (sticky, tacky, or stretchy). The presence of cervical mucus is an indication of fertility.

Observing and recording your cervical mucus every day allows you to use this information to avoid pregnancy or achieve pregnancy. It can also give you information about your hormone balance, the health of your cervix, and more!

It starts with simply paying attention to your toilet paper. You’re already wiping, right? Just do it consciously! When you use the bathroom (pee or poo!), wipe yourself before and after you go and observe your toilet paper for cervical mucus. When you see cervical mucus, you’re fertile! A good book like Taking Charge of your Fertility (from Amazon USA and Amazon Canada) or a certified Fertility Awareness Educator can help you gain more confidence in understanding your cervical mucus patterns.

Natural birth control? Conscious conception? A window into your health? What’s not to love!

2.

STEP 2: GET PHYSICAL

Once you’ve warmed up and are more comfortable with each other, it’s time to see how she feels.

The hormones estrogen and progesterone also change the position and feel of the cervix. Generally, she is open and soft (like your lips) when you’re fertile, and closed and hard (like the tip of your tongue) when you’re not. Sometimes she’s high and hard to reach and other times she’s low and easy to touch.

By getting to know these unique changes, you can confirm whether you’re fertile or infertile. This is especially helpful for menstruators who are experiencing continuous mucus patterns, like during breastfeeding or after discontinuing hormonal contraception.

So how do you do it?

Get down (but not dirty, wash your hands first!) into a squat and insert your longest finger into your vagina. I recommend focusing on one or two of the changes that are obvious to you. Using the same finger to keep it consistent, do this every night to get better at detecting her subtle changes.

You’re going to love touching her. You may even find it pleasurable!!

3.

STEP 3: TAKE A PHOTO OF HER

Now that you two are hanging out every day, it’s time to celebrate your blossoming relationship with a Cervix Portrait!

It took me over 30 years to see my cervix and the first time I saw that beautiful, wet, pink, little donut, my love for her grew far deeper than I could have ever imagined. Now I display a photo of her on my fireplace in my living room where she’s initiated many fabulous conversations! Seeing that smiling cervix every day reminds me how magnificent my body is and how much I love my cervix.

Head over to the Beautiful Cervix Project to find hundreds of cervix photos, a video on how to take the photo, and even purchase a kit which includes a vaginal speculum, hand mirror, flashlight, and instructions.

I also offer Cervix Portrait parties in my hometown, Edmonton, Canada. It’s a 2-hour workshop which includes education about your cervix, delicious and nutritious food for your cervix, your very own plastic vaginal speculum with a demonstration on how to use it, and a photo of her! I’ll also be offering the party at this year’s Spirit Weavers Gathering!

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Denell Nawrocki of Cervical Wellness says,

“The cervix is one of the most powerful portions of a female body. It is also one of the most vulnerable and ignored.”

Isn’t it about time you fell in love with her?

Remember, just like with all relationships, patience and care are important so take your time getting to know her and enjoy falling in love. And don’t underestimate the help and support of a good book or educated Fertility Awareness Educator to help you along the way.

With love from my cervix to yours,
Chloe xo
